Dressing Retro – Advice From A Men’s Fashion Expert
Each decade has its hits and misses when it comes to style but some retro pieces from the past remain enduring classics. We’ve all seen photos, maybe our parents or photos of past eras, where some of the clothing causes much amusement but its true to say that many fashion trends do come back maybe in a more updated form that is suitable for the present day. However some pieces remain much sought after and can fetch a lot of money when they go up for sale on internet auction sites or in vintage clothes shops.
Two classic items of men’s retro fashion from the 1950s are the leather jacket and the classic Levis 501 jeans. The birth of Rock and Roll saw Elvis Presley wearing leather during this decade and leather jackets were also popularized by Marlon Brando in the film The Wild One. This classic ‘rebel’ look was also adopted by James Dean whose film Rebel Without A Cause saw the cast dressed in Levis 501s, although it is reported that Dean himself wore Lee jeans and a pair of his Lee jeans fetched $35,850 at auction in 2006. Teamed with a classic white tea and boots this is a look that still endures to this day.
Men’s suits became slimmer and cooler looking with the birth of the Mod movement in the early 1960s. Jackets, trousers, shirt collars and ties all became narrower and this sharp suited and booted look still endures today. Before the 1960s the rule was that a shirt was worn under a blazer but the Beatnik movement saw men wearing black turtleneck jumpers under their blazers – another look that still stands the test of time. However in the latter part of the 60s the hippie movement spawned a whole new look of velvet bell bottomed trousers teamed with kaftans and ponchos – a look that is perhaps best left in the past!
The hippy flares of the early 70s and the disco looks for men back in the late 70s are perhaps best left forgotten and indeed this decade is often deemed the one that style forgot! In the 1980s sportswear and particularly trainers/sneakers became popular and sports footwear from this decade can fetch a lot in vintage shops today. Adidas trainers still produce new trainers in 80s retro styles and high top trainers have recently made a fashion comeback.
In the early 1990s sportswear and trainers were still cool due to the influence of both the Hip Hop music scene and the dance/clubbers scene. Trainers from this time will also fetch a good price in vintage stores with Nike being thought of as a particularly cool brand during this era. Grunge music also influenced the fashion of the early 90s and the plaid, flannel shirts, torn jeans and Doc Marten boots are still a look adopted by the aspiring rock stars of today.
